Raw Material Preparation:
Bauxite: The primary raw material is bauxite, which contains a high percentage of alumina (Al2O3). The bauxite is carefully selected to ensure the desired alumina content and minimal impurities.
Iron filings or scrap iron: Added to the mixture to aid in the reduction process during fusion.
Anthracite coal: Used as a reducing agent.
Fusion:
Electric Arc Furnace (EAF): The prepared mixture is fed into an electric arc furnace. The furnace generates high temperatures (around 2000-2200°C or 3632-3992°F) through electric arcs struck between carbon electrodes.
Reduction and Fusion: At these high temperatures, the alumina in bauxite melts and reacts with the carbon from anthracite to produce molten alumina. Iron and other impurities are reduced and separated.
Cooling:
Cooling the Molten Alumina: The molten alumina is poured out of the furnace into molds or onto a cooling floor. Controlled cooling is crucial to achieve the desired crystal structure and size.
Formation of Ingots: As the material cools, it solidifies into large ingots or blocks of fused alumina.
Crushing and Grinding:
Primary Crushing: The cooled ingots are first broken down using jaw crushers or other heavy machinery.
Secondary Crushing and Grinding: The material is further crushed and ground into smaller sizes using cone crushers, roll crushers, and ball mills. This process continues until the desired particle size is achieved.
Magnetic Separation:
Removing Metallic Impurities: The ground material is passed through magnetic separators to remove any remaining iron particles and other metallic impurities.
Sieving and Classification:
Particle Size Distribution: The crushed and cleaned alumina is then sieved into different grades based on particle size. This is done using vibrating screens and air classifiers.
Quality Control: Each batch is tested for chemical composition, particle size distribution, and other quality parameters to ensure it meets industry standards.
White fused alumina (WFA) is available in a wide range of sizes to meet the diverse needs of various industrial applications. The size of WFA particles can significantly impact their performance, making it crucial to select the appropriate size for specific uses. Below are the typical sizes in which white fused alumina is available:
Macro Grit Sizes:
Coarse Grit: Ranges from F8 to F220 (FEPA standard)
Common sizes include F12, F24, F36, F46, F60, F80, F100, F120, F150, F180, and F220.
Applications: Heavy-duty grinding, cutting, and surface preparation.
Micro Grit Sizes:
Fine Grit: Ranges from F230 to F1200 (FEPA standard)
Common sizes include F240, F280, F320, F360, F400, F500, F600, F800, and F1000.
Applications: Precision grinding, lapping, and polishing.
Powder Form:
Ultra-fine powders with particle sizes ranging from a few microns to sub-micron levels.
Applications: High-precision polishing, specialty ceramics, coatings, and as a filler in various composite materials.
Choosing the Right Size:
Coarse Grit (F8 - F220): Suitable for applications requiring high material removal rates and aggressive surface preparation, such as grinding high carbon steel and heavy-duty polishing.
Medium to Fine Grit (F230 - F1200): Ideal for applications demanding a balance between material removal and surface finish quality, such as fine grinding, lapping, and precision polishing.
Ultra-Fine Powder: Perfect for applications where an exceptionally smooth and precise finish is required, such as in the production of advanced ceramics, high-performance coatings, and catalyst carriers.
Selecting the appropriate size of white fused alumina is crucial for achieving the desired performance in your specific application. Whether you need coarse grit for heavy-duty grinding or ultra-fine powders for precision applications, white fused alumina is available in a range of sizes to meet your needs. Ensure optimal results by choosing the right size for your abrasive, polishing, casting, coating, catalytic, ceramic, or refractory application.
