Product Description

Product Description

Cryolite, scientifically referred to as sodium hexafluoroaluminate or sodium aluminum fluoride, boasts the chemical formula Na3AlF6. This substance is characterized by its white, fine crystalline form and is devoid of any odor. It exhibits greater solubility compared to natural cryolite, a specific gravity of 3, and a hardness scale of 2~3. It melts at a scorching 1009 degrees Celsius and is known for its hygroscopic nature, meaning it readily absorbs moisture when exposed. Cryolite's versatility shines through its usage as a flux in aluminum electrolysis and as a wear-resistant filler in rubber and grinding wheels. Additionally, it serves as an enamel whitening agent, a glass sunscreen, a metal flux, and even as an insecticide for agricultural crops. The renowned Hall-Heroult method employs a fluoride melt primarily composed of cryolite as a solvent in the production of metallic aluminum. Remarkably, no other compound has yet been found that can completely substitute cryolite, mainly due to its unique and indispensable properties.
