Cryolite, also known as sodium hexafluoroaluminate or sodium aluminum fluoride, is a remarkable compound with the molecular formula Na3AlF6. It appears as a white fine crystal, is odorless, and possesses a solubility surpassing that of natural cryolite. With a specific gravity of 3 and a hardness rating between 2 and 3, it melts at an impressive 1009 degrees Celsius. However, cryolite tends to absorb moisture easily. This versatile compound is prominently utilized as a flux in aluminum electrolysis, a wear-resistant filler in rubber and grinding wheels, and serves as an enamel whitening agent and a glass sunscreen. Additionally, it functions as a metal flux and as a crop insecticide. The Hall-Heroult method leverages a cryolite-based fluoride melt as a solvent to produce metallic aluminum, as no alternative has yet been discovered to replace cryolite due to its unique and essential properties, which extend beyond its primary functions.
